Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Your Essential Checklist for Prevention and Early Detection

At Lyndhurst Gynecologic Associates, we believe that prevention and early detection are key when it comes to breast cancer. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we encourage women to take proactive steps to protect their health. Use this checklist to guide your efforts in reducing risk and catching any signs early.

Prevention Checklist

Maintain a Healthy Weight

☐ Keep your weight in a healthy range, particularly after menopause, to lower your breast cancer risk.

Stay Active

☐ Incorporate at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise into your weekly routine. Regular physical activity helps maintain hormonal balance and supports your overall health.

Limit Alcohol

☐ Try to limit alcohol intake to one drink per day or less, as even moderate alcohol consumption can increase your risk.

Avoid Smoking

☐ Smoking is linked to many cancers, including breast cancer. If you smoke, seek support to quit and protect your health.

Breastfeed, If Possible

☐ Breastfeeding for several months can slightly lower breast cancer risk and is beneficial for both you and your baby.

Focus on Nutrition

☐ A healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains supports your overall health and can help reduce cancer risk.

Early Detection Checklist

Perform Self-Breast Exams Monthly

☐ Get into the habit of performing a self-breast exam each month. This helps you become familiar with your breasts and detect any unusual changes.

Schedule Mammograms Regularly

☐ Start yearly mammograms at age 40, or earlier if you have a higher risk. Regular screening is one of the best ways to detect breast cancer early.

Know Your Family History

☐ Speak with your family members about their medical history, particularly concerning breast or ovarian cancer, to better understand your risk.

Get Clinical Breast Exams Annually

☐ Along with self-exams and mammograms, make sure you’re getting a clinical breast exam from your OB/GYN each year for a comprehensive breast health assessment.

Watch for Warning Signs

☐ Stay alert for any changes in your breasts, including lumps, skin changes, nipple discharge, or changes in size. If you notice any of these signs, don’t delay in contacting your healthcare provider.
