Warm weather has finally arrived in most parts of the country. Families are getting out of the house more to do fun activities, outings, and day trips. You’ve probably also noticed the increase in gas and food prices due to inflation. Most people don’t want to cut back on their family fun and outings. One method to save money while not sacrificing your valuable family time is to start cooking more at home meals and having to-go snacks for your family’s excursions. Another factor to consider is that you don’t want to jeopardize your family’s health with highly processed snack foods. Here are some snack ideas that will both feed your family and promote healthy eating.

1. Nuts and Seeds

Having nuts and trail mix on hand at all times is helpful. Nuts and seeds are tiny powerhouses that are packed with healthy nutrients. You can easily divide them into bags or containers as a snack on the go. They are great to have around when you have guests in the house.

2. Yogurt

Yogurt is a great source of protein and calcium but you must be careful when selecting your type of yogurt. There are many yogurts on the market that contain large amounts of sugar, especially the ones that are marketed for kids. Make sure to choose a yogurt that does not contain a lot of sugar. Another option is to purchase plain yogurt and then add fruit or honey to it for flavor.

3. Popcorn

Popcorn can be a healthy and convenient snack if you choose the correct one. Avoid popcorns that contain added butter or sweetening ingredients. If you don’t like just plain popcorn, there are popcorn seasonings that provide a bit more flavor without a lot of extra calories.

4. Fruit

Having fruit stocked in the house is important. Find out which fruits your family prefers and keep them stocked. Lots of kids love grapes, apples, clementines, bananas, and more. Fruit is a good snack to eat when on the go.

5. Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches

PB&J sandwiches can be a healthy snack if made the right way. Start with a whole grain bread that will provide fiber. Use a peanut butter and jelly brand that does not contain added sugar. PB&J sandwiches are great to make ahead and keep in the refrigerator.
