Birth Control Side Effects You Shouldn’t Ignore

Birth Control Side Effects You Shouldn’t Ignore

Birth control is a safe and effective way to prevent pregnancy and manage various gynecological conditions. However, like any medication, hormonal birth control can cause side effects. While many are mild and temporary, some side effects could signal a more serious issue. At Lyndhurst Gynecologic Associates, with locations throughout North Carolina, our providers want you to feel empowered to recognize when something doesn’t feel right.

Here are several birth control side effects you should not ignore:

  1. Severe Headaches or Migraines Mild headaches can be a normal side effect, especially during the first few weeks of using hormonal contraceptives. However, new or worsening migraines—especially those accompanied by visual changes—could indicate an increased risk of stroke, particularly for individuals over 35 or those who smoke. Let your provider know right away if you experience these symptoms.
  2. Chest Pain or Shortness of Breath Any sudden chest pain, trouble breathing, or pain that radiates to the arm or jaw could be a warning sign of a blood clot or heart problem. Estrogen-containing birth control methods can increase the risk of blood clots, especially in those with underlying conditions. Don’t wait—seek immediate medical care.
  3. Leg Pain or Swelling Unexplained pain, redness, or swelling in one leg may also be a sign of a deep vein thrombosis (DVT). This is a rare but serious complication of some hormonal contraceptives. Contact your doctor if you notice these symptoms.
  4. Changes in Vision Blurry vision, partial vision loss, or seeing flashing lights may be linked to increased blood pressure or other complications associated with birth control pills or patches. Vision changes should always be taken seriously.
  5. Severe Mood Changes Some individuals report anxiety, depression, or mood swings after starting hormonal birth control. If you notice a sudden change in mood, loss of interest in daily activities, or thoughts of self-harm, reach out to your healthcare provider. Mental health is a critical part of your overall well-being.
  6. Persistent Abdominal Pain Cramping can be normal for some birth control users, but sharp or persistent abdominal pain could point to issues like gallbladder disease, ovarian cysts, or even ectopic pregnancy (in rare cases of contraceptive failure). A provider can help rule out more serious concerns.
